Dear friends,

We decided to postpone the Moby Dick reading marathon scheduled for Thursday and thus to join the protest against the use of violence toward demonstrators for social justice. 

This is a huge disappointment for us, but we feel that we can’t ignore the larger context for the event. 

We very much thank you for showing enthusiasm for the idea and for volunteering to participate.  We hope to be able to hold this event at a later date – we’ll let you know.

Sometimes you don’t know where to go

Because you don’t know someone who has gone

Where your heart wants you to be.

At my age there are few models

Of old ladies who continue

To follow dreams – in words,

In the world – who make rhymes

From their love of living.

And share it with generations to come.

Little things give you away.

It is not stamped on your forehead

that you used to feel at home on wheels.

It does not ooze through your casual clothes

that you shared your first menses with your mother, father and two brothers,

cramped on ten square meters in a fugitive camp.

You don’t even think of these days – here, in the soft light of candelabra.

Do you?

Against the velvety touch of your jacket, the rusty sun of older days

fades into cheap documentary.

When dinner is over, you pick breadcrumbs from your plate

and quick motions of the fork gather the last drops of balsamico.

A Comedy of Errors in Your Favour

Dear students and lecturers of the English and American studies department,

The Cameri theatre is running Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” and we are happy to announce our department theatre evening! The evening is planned for the 21.3 at 8:30, and the price is only 50 NIS per ticket!!! The amount of tickets is limited so if you are interested, please hurry and send me an email with your name and phone number, before the 28.2. The money will be collected on the first day of term or by later notification.

Congratulations to all of our BA students, and most especially to Maizy Eliash who is our first English Department student representative in years!

Elections for Student Representative are coming!

I'm not going to discuss the undergrad representative here* but I do want every master's student who is eligible to vote to know that Adva Berar is the only candidate for the master's students (she studies Hebrew literature) who appears to be at all interested in what we have to say. If we elect her, we're electing someone with similar interests and with a fairly good plan of action involving interdepartmental communication, and she's the only one who's bothered to sort out an English Department POC [Point Of Contact - that would be me].

And that's all I have to say about that. Please vote on Wednesday.

* Vote Maizy! Please! It's high time we had an English Literature student representing the English Department, and not outsiders who have repeatedly and consistently done absolutely nothing for us in the past...
